Fan Projects and ModsSometimes, a game takes hold and I’m inspired to create something new for it, whether it be a mod, a level, or simple experimentation. Here are some samples of my solo projects.
Gears of War: A Night at the Museum
Gears of War revolutionized the third person shooter genre with its cover fire, level design, and reload mechanics. Drawn by the setting and gameplay, I sought to make a polished single player map with challenging encounters and a puzzle based boss fight.
Inspired by my favorite art and science museums, it uses a gallery style layout with custom made exhibits for players to enjoy. Some unique challenges to this project was scripting adaptive encounters that change depending on the player’s strategies and an AI controlled ally who assists the player without taking the spotlight.

Alien Swarm is a four person top-down shooter where players work together to explore creepy facilities and battle waves of alien monsters. After completing the original campaign three times with friends, I wanted to make my own level. While digging through the game files, I uncovered several unused enemies including a massive alien queen.
With the queen as my finale, I created a massive level that uses darkness and shadow-play to both lead and frighten the players. Players can choose from multiple difficulty levels, determining the number of enemies and the types of enemies that can appear during each play. The final battle with the alien queen required additional scripting, leading to a cinematic and memorable final confrontation.
